Meet Emma from Auckland, New Zealand…

When did you get into transcription?

I initially became interested in transcribing when I decided not to return to full time employment at the end of my maternity leave, in 2012. I really wanted to stay home with my children, but also wanted to be able to earn some income. Transcription work seemed quite difficult to get into in New Zealand, so I contacted a former colleague who I knew worked from home as a transcriptionist.

She was able to get me some sporadic work (generally covering other people) but I was after something more consistent so I was very excited to see an advertisement from TranscribeMe looking for new transcriptionists to join their team. I’ve now transcribed close to 300 hours of audio files!

What does your typical work environment look like, and what else do you like to do?

I currently work at the dining room table due to lack of space in our house, which is not ideal. But, my husband is currently in the process of constructing me an inbuilt desk in a bay window area which overlooks the reserve next to our house. I am really looking forward to having my own workspace there.

My two kids (aged almost 4 and 2) currently take up the majority of my spare time, so that is full-on but a lot of fun. I love spending time at the beach, and as it is almost summer in New Zealand, we will hopefully get time to have some fun out on the water on our jet ski soon!

What’s your favorite achievement as a transcriber so far?

I always feel quite proud when I complete a particularly challenging audio transcription. Probably one of the most challenging files I completed was with someone suffering from a severe speech impediment – I spent a lot of time on this particular file, as I really wanted to accurately transcribe what she was saying. She has a very interesting and beautiful story, and I was quite proud to have transcribed most of what she was saying.

What is your favorite part about being a part of TranscribeMe?

I just love the fact that it is so flexible! I pick up work when I can, rather than having it assigned when it possibly may not suit me. My main priority is my kids, so being a TranscribeMe transcriptionist means I can put their needs first and work in my downtime.
