Meet Yuen from Perth, Australia…

When did you get into transcription?

I have always loved typing! As a little child, one of my favourite things was going to my grandmother’s office and using her ancient typewriter to “help” her type up things. As I grew older, I had always been around administration-type tasks in the roles that I had, then got into legal transcription and found that I had a true affinity to listening and understanding people on tape. The rest, as they say, is history.

What does your typical work environment look like, and what else do you like to do?

I have created, over the years, my ideal work space. I have my own office within my home, with a high speed connection including all the bells and whistles that I have built up over time, from great noise-cancelling headphones, to the best programs money can buy to enhance my listening experience. Most importantly, I have a box on my desk for my 2 cats to watch me work from and doggy beds for my 2 dogs. Yes, it does get crowded in my office, but they want to be where I am, so who am I to argue with that?

In my spare time, I am a frustrated artist trying to bust out! I paint, I craft, I crochet, I cook, and I trivia. I’ve been on the Aussie version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and am hoping to get selected for My Kitchen Rules.

What’s your favorite achievement as a transcriber so far?

While there have been many great moments, I believe the best thing is when I began subtitling movies and TV shows (when there were little or none to be had at the time) for my son, who was born profoundly deaf. I was pretty chuffed (Aussie for happy) when I could do that for him.

What is your favorite part about being a part of TranscribeMe?

I like the autonomy that it gives, in terms of choosing files that I have the time to do as well as the variety that crosses my path.
